  1. Steel Cut Oats are a pain in the microwave. Unlike other things I cook in the Microwave, theses have to be watched constantly or they will boil over and make a wicked mess. I tried Quaker quick steel cut oats because the the box said “Cooks in 3 minutes” They bend the truth. 3 minutes after you boil the water and then add it to the oats and microwave. Well if I am going to boil water why the hell do I need to cook them in the microwave if they take just 3 more minutes on the stove. All that being said, I find the best way to microwave them is to put a little more water(I use very hot tap water) than is called for and 4- 6 minutes in the microwave at 50% power.

  2. if you want the simplicity of a microwave you can get a rice cooker / instant pot with a “ready at XX:XX” timer setting, then fill it with water and oats (and salt if you like it) the night before and you got perfect oatmeal waiting in the morning.

  3. I always use a bigger bowl because I’ve had the same experience. If you cook them on the stove you can kind of see them expand there too, so it makes sense that they do the same thing in the microwave
